Description

We're the A.V. Team! A small team of RIT students and recent alums that have come together to make a commercial title from a school project game. A.V. is a first-person stealth-puzzle game for the PC, developed in the Unity engine. The game places the player in the role of a rogue music-processing algorithm from a computer's sound systems. From this role, the player can view the world only through audible means. When idle, the player views the game world as only a plain, black void. However, each sound in the game sends out a pulse of energy, illuminating a small portion of the world around that sound's source. Through this function and with the add of six world altering instruments, players can visualize their surroundings and learn to navigate through a strange and complex computer world.

History

The Start

A.V. started as the final capstone project of two RIT Game Design and Development Graduate Students, Preston Johnson and Doug Lynn in late August 2013. The duo quickly gained support with their unique stealth puzzle music game and its "Sound To Light" game mechanic. Over the coming months the little prototype gained traction and even won an award for Best Sensory Experience during the RPI 2014 GameFest. The academic goals of the project were completed in May 2014 and the project was moved to be full production.

Where We Are Now

A.V. changed over to full commercial development in June 2014. All the design aspects have been mapped out and a majority of the visual and audio assets are already together. The A.V. Team is working on refining what is already in the demo, piecing together the new areas, and running a KickStarter campaign to get funds for even more exciting features including the Oculus Rift VR!

Where We Are Heading

A.V. is being targeted for a submission to the Independent Games Festival (IGF) Awards in September. The game is currently set to be completed in mid-October as a digital download for PC, Mac and Linux. Pending the level of funding received through the KickStarter campaign and publisher approval, A.V.’s release will extend to home consoles. Beyond the game’s release, the team is investigating the exploration of new genres utilizing A.V.’s core mechanic, the possibility of a follow-up title, or the exploration of additional game concepts outside the realm of A.V.
